Cyclone Ockhi live updates: Storm weakens into ‘depression’, may not hit Gujarat

Cyclone Ockhi, which was headed towards northern Maharashtra and Gujarat, gradually weakened into a "deep depression" on Tuesday night, limiting the possibility of making landfall in Gujarat. In anticipation of the storm, over 3,000 people had been evacuated from 29 coastal villages in Surat district. The deep depression is likely to bring light to moderate rain in many parts of the state over the next three days, the Indian Meteorological Department said.
As Ockhi passed the coast of Mumbai Tuesday, the city witnessed the highest December rainfall in 142 years — since December 12, 1967 — with Colaba receiving 70.4 mm rainfall and Santacruz receiving 36 mm in 24 hours.

he Indian Navy on Tuesday, meanwhile, rescued 185 fishermen stranded off the coast of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Severely dehydrated, they were moved to safety. Till 6.00 pm on Tuesday, 608 people have been rescued from sea, the defence ministry confirmed.

11.31 am: Till 9 am this morning, 629 people, including five Sri Lankan nationals, have been rescued by personnel, the defence ministry says. There are 233 fishermen from Tamil Nadu and 361 from Kerala who have been rescued. 10.57 am: According to the MeT, the cyclone has weakened due to “unfavourable environmental conditions. Jayanta Sarkar, director of the MeT, was quoted as saying by PTI, “The system weakened mainly because of unfavourable environmental conditions, like high wind shear and colder sea surface near the coast. The system weakened because it is winter. The story would have been different had it occurred during the monsoon or pre-monsoon season.”
10.19 am: Three fishermen from Tamil Nadu and two from Kerala have joined the search for the missing fishermen at sea. for 3 days on board INS Kalpeni #CycloneOckhi
10.00 am: Search and rescue operations are still underway by the Indian Navy and coast guard for the missing fishermen off the Kerala and Tamil Nadu coasts. There are 22 ships and five aircrafts involved in operations. On Tuesday, 185 fishermen, severely dehydrated, were rescued by personnel.
9.31 am: Due to the cyclone, Congress and BJP rallies in poll-bound Gujarat were cancelled on Tuesday but will resume today. BJP president Amit Shah’s rallies in Rajula town of Amreli and Mahuva and Shihor of Bhavnagar district were cancelled, while Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s in Morbi, Dhrangadhra and Surendranagar were called off. Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address rallies in Dhandhuka, Dahod and Netrang. On Tuesday, Modi had said he was continuously monitoring the cyclone, and has provided assistance to those affected. He had appealed to his party’s Karyakaraks in the state to “devote themselves to providing all possible assistance.” Soon after, Rahul Gandhi too urged Congress workers to “support the needy during this hour of crisis.”
9.00 am: Fishermen have been cautioned against venturing out to sea, as conditions are likely to remain rough for the next 18 hours.
8.45 am: The last bulletin issued by the IMD on Tuesday night stated that Cyclone Ockhi is likely to hit Gujarat only as a "depression". Located 240 kilometres south-southwest of the state, it is likely to bring rain over the next three days. The cyclone has dissipated due to "unfavourable environmental conditions", and due to the onset of winter, IMD added

As many as 12 killed in New York’s deadliest fire in decades

More than 160 firefighters helped bring the blaze under control. (Source: Fire Department New York/Twitter) A massive fire ignited accidentally by a three-year-old boy swept through a five-story apartment building in New York, killing at least 12 people including a toddler and injuring four others in the deadliest blaze to hit the city in decades. The fire broke out around 6:50 pm (local time) yesterday on the first floor of the Prospect Avenue apartment in the Bronx borough of the city and spread quickly, officials said, adding that the cause of the blaze is under investigation. “We found that this fire started in a kitchen on the first floor,” fire commissioner Daniel Nigro said. “It started from a young boy, three and a half years old, playing with the burners on the stove. The fire got started, the mother was not aware of it – she was alerted by the young man screaming.” The boy’s mother fled with her two children, leaving the door to the apartment open – allowing t...

Ukraine crisis: Exchange of hundreds of prisoners takes place

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko attends a ceremony to welcome prisoners of war (POWs), released after the exchange with pro-Russian separatists, upon their arrival at an airport in Kharkiv, Ukraine December 27, 2017. (Source: Reuters)  Ukraine and separatist rebels in the east of the country have exchanged hundreds of prisoners, in one of the biggest swaps since the conflict began in 2014. Around 230 people were sent to rebel-held areas in return for 74 prisoners who had been held by pro-Russia rebels in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, BBC reported on Wednesday. It was the first swap in 15 months. The release and exchange of prisoners was one of the points in the Minsk peace agreement, signed in 2015. The deal has stalled since and analysts say the swap does not signify wider progress. Both sides continue to hold other prisoners. The number of prisoners swapped was lower than initially announced after dozens of people who were meant to be returned to rebel-held terr...

Nepal declares ban on solo, blind and double amputee climbers from Everest

This ban is likely to irk solo mountaineers, who enjoy the challenge of climbing alone. In a bid to prevent accidents, Nepal has banned solo climbers from climbing its mountains, including Mount Everest, reported news agency AFP. Earlier on Friday, the cabinet declared revised regulations of the Himalayan nation’s mountaineering, where banning solo climbers from scaling its mountains was one of the key measures being flagged ahead of the 2018 spring climbing season. The cabinet also declared a ban on double amputee and blind climbers, even though Everest has drawn multitudes of mountaineers wanting to overcome their disabilities and achieve the formidable feat. “The changes have barred solo expeditions, which were allowed before,” Maheshwor Neupane, secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, told AFP. Neupane added that the law was revised to make mountaineering safer and decrease deaths. Earlier in April this year, an experienced...
