Young Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong sentenced to three months in jail

A Hong Kong court has sentenced democracy activist Joshua Wong to three months in jail in a contempt case stemming from the 2014 “Umbrella Movement” protests.

The 21-year-old Wong was among activists who learned their punishment in Hong Kong’s High Court on Wednesday. Wong and another defendant were remanded into custody. The others received suspended sentences.

Wong had pleaded guilty last year for failing to comply with a court order to clear out of a protest camp during the 79-day gathering in the semiautonomous Chinese city.

Wong gained global attention for helping lead the protests while still a teenager. He and other leaders of the protests are appealing their sentences in a separate case. The judge who heard their appeals on Tuesday will issue a ruling on a later date.

Beijing’s battle against air pollution will take time and be very tough to win despite recent improvements, the acting mayor of China’s capital said on Wednesday. US slaps anti-dumping duty on polyester staple fiber from China, India

(source: Wikimedia commons) The Trump Administration has slapped anti-dumping duties on stainless steel flangs and finer denier polyester staple fiber from China and India. Exporters from China and India received countervailing subsidies of 41.73 to 47.55 per cent and 9.50 to 25.28 percent, respectively, the US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross alleged Wednesday. As such he has instructed US Customs and Border Protection to collect cash deposits from importers of fine denier polyester staple fiber from China and India based on these final rates. “The US will no longer sit back and watch as its domestic businesses are destroyed by unfair foreign government subsidies.
